This section details how to get started with Windows Embedded and working with Avnet Embedded.

Here you can find detailed information on how to evaluate an embedded operating system, obtain quotations for development kits and runtime licenses, requirements before placing an order and estimated delivery times.

Getting started - the process

1. If you are considering any Windows Embedded operating system for your project and you have an OS in mind then you can 'try before you buy' with an free evaluation CD. We can supply free evaluation software for XP Embedded, CE 5.0 and CE 6.0, Embedded Server, WEPOS and Microsoft Dynamics RMS Store Operations. To request your free copy either complete the enquiry form by clicking on the 'Free Software' button on the right or by calling any one of our European offices.

If you are uncertain on the best operating sytem for your device, then feel free to contact any member of the team who will be happy to discuss your project in more depth and offer advice and support (Contact Us).

2. Once you have decided on the best Windows Embedded operating system, the next step is to purchase the full development kit (applicable to XP Embedded and CE) or the OEM Pre-Installation Kit (OPK) which are the master set of CD's needed to build the image. For projects requiring an OPK, the OEM needs to have in place a completed and approved Microsoft Customer License Agreement (CLA).

3. CLA - every OEM deploying an embedded image needs to have a valid CLA in place before runtime (or COA) licenses can be purchased. Obtaining a CLA through Avnet Embedded is free and we faciliate the process on your behalf. The process from completing a CLA to receiving approval is about 3 weeks.

4. When you are ready to purchase the runtime licenses for your device, we can supply you a quotation reflective of the quantity you require. We hold the majority of runtime licenses ex-stock and can deliver next working day (subject to location).

5. If you have not previously transacted with Avnet Embedded, you may need to set up a new account. There are several ways in which to transact and pay for your order - via credit account, proforma invoice or credit/debit card. Please contact your local Avnet Embedded team member in order to establish an account.
